Day 20 - Alexandria (6th Jan 11)

"Alexandria is the second-largest city of Egypt, with a population of 4.1 million, extending about 32 km (20 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north-central part of the country; it is also the largest city lying directly on the Mediterranean coast.

In ancient times, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world. It was founded around a small pharaonic town c. 331 BC byAlexander the Great. It remained Egypt's capital for nearly a thousand years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in AD 641, when a new capital was founded at Fustat (Fustat was later absorbed into Cairo). Alexandria was known because of its Lighthouse of Alexandria(Pharos), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; its library (the largest library in the ancient world); and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages."

Despite the glorious history, Alexandria is quite a forgettable destination. Its ancient wonder was no longer around, and the Catacombs is not too bad. For its history and fame, Alexandria is worth a half-day visit, and it was the least interesting place among the sites I visited in Egypt.
